Historical overview

The modern tricolor was created in 1918, with the proclamation of the First Republic of Armenia. The flag was designed by scientist Stepan Malkhasyants.

During the Soviet era, the flag changed repeatedly. Only in 1990, when Armenia regained its independence, was the historic tricolor restored as the national symbol.

The meaning of flowers

Each color has a special meaning associated with the history and culture of the Armenian people.

  • The red color is the blood of Armenian heroes who fought for freedom and independence, and also a symbol of the Armenian Highlands.

  • Blue is the peaceful sky under which people live and a symbol of faith in a better future.

  • Orange (golden) is a symbol of hard work, creativity, endurance and energy of the Armenian people.

Together, these colours express the following idea: the people, having gone through trials and preserved their land, look to the future with confidence and hope.

The flag in public life

In Armenia, the flag can be seen everywhere: in government buildings, schools, and at sporting events. National holidays, especially Independence Day (September 21), are marked by widespread use of the flag.

Many Armenians living in the diaspora also hang the tricolor in their homes or use it in clothing and jewelry, thereby emphasizing their connection to their homeland.
